From GQ....
"Julian Ferretti, the man often called "Italy's Richard Branson," is one of his country's loudest and most compelling voices for a national conversion to renewable energy sources. Over the last decade, Ferretti's companies have invested an estimated USD$300 million in solar and wind research and development-- an amount roughly equal to the combined investments of both the government and all other private investors in the country. If Italy's alternative energy future were a corporation, Ferretti would hold 51% stock.
"The future of power production is but the latest in a long series of battles that Ferretti has borne the standard for. In the early nineties, Ferretti spearheaded the drive to reform the national rail system; in the eighties, the situation of Italy's water treatment facilities was his pet cause. But his passion, the 58-year old informs me, has remained unchanged:
"'I want a better world, for my children, for my grandchildren. Don't we all?' he says, as we look out over the beauty of the Italian countryside from Ferretti's villa.
"When asked if he is an environmentalist, then, Ferretti laughs. 'If you like. I'm not exactly Greenpeace's favorite person. When I say better, I mean--' he pauses, looking into the depths of his wine glass and the excellent pinot noir we're drinking; his free hand draws thoughts from the air. '--cleaner, yes, but most importantly, more efficient. I like the world to run smooth, well-oiled. I like order, and I like finding better ways to solve our problems. And yes, I admit, I'm old enough to have seen the damage we do to the earth, so... call me an environmentalist, if you like. But I believe the answer is not to stop all industry, all production-- we must only start working smarter.'
"'Working smarter.' The phrase could sum up much of Ferretti's long and interesting career. At various times he's worn the hat of CEO, engineer (both civil and structural), efficiency consultant, architect, local politician, and (as I discover from the framed sketches that decorate his home) artist, just to name a few. He comes, he sees, he innovates-- and then it's off to the next project.
"'I admit it, I bore easily,' Ferretti chuckles when confronted. 'I have a lot of energy, but I hate wasting my time. I yell so much for others to move because if I don't, it takes years. I'm too old for that.'
"Perhaps, but Ferretti is the picture of fitness and, yes, energy for a man pushing sixty. When asked the secret to his health, he gestures at the wine glass as if that should make everything plain, then adds on, 'Sex with a beautiful woman. Every day. You have seen my wife?'
"The sun is setting, now, but my host shows no signs of wishing to leave the patio. Lamps are lit and another bottle of wine is opened. This, Ferretti informs me, is the good life; I am not inclined to argue. (continued on page 197)"
